Training Your Staff and Building Your Business Doesn’t Have To Be Costly

Investing in your business is a necessary part of growth, but finding the capital to take that step is not easy. That is why entrepreneurs must not overlook the free resources available to them, many of which can be found at NYC Business Solutions, a set of free services offered by the NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) to help businesses start, operate, and expand in New York City.

Receive Grants to Train Your Staff

Since 2007, SBS has helped more than 100 companies train nearly 3,500 workers by providing them with more than $6 million in grants. Business owners can access funding through Customized Training grants, provided by NYC Business Solutions, which enable businesses to invest in the professional training services they need to develop staff skills specific to their industry. Customized Training provides awards of up to $400,000 that can cover 60-70% of eligible training costs, which eliminates the financial constraints that keeps businesses from investing in a more efficient staff.
And more businesses are taking advantage.
On May 2, 2012, SBS awarded over $200,000 in Customized Training grants to seven New York businesses to train 93 employees matched by over $130,000 in funds from the employers. These Customized Training awards are projected to increase revenues for the awarded businesses by more than $400,000 and increase the wages of its trainees by 20 percent. What Free Staff Training Can Do:

SSTL dba Bedroom Furniture Discounts is an online furniture retailer and wholesaler. The business will use a $25,085 Customized Training award to train 14 employees, including 2 new hires, on new order management software. The software will increase efficiency by allowing the company to achieve seamless coordination with its vendors. The program is projected to result in wage increases of 10 percent.”

Restaurant owners can also capitalize on training

If you own a restaurant, there is even a program that has already been designed for your staff. In partnership with the New York State Restaurant Association, NYC Business Solutions offers local restaurant and foodservice establishments free restaurant management training to develop the skills of their entry-level staff. Developed with input from restaurateurs across the country, this Restaurant Management Training focuses on four key areas that allow staff to take on new responsibilities, and help restaurant owners see greater revenue, and reduce costs.
You can choose to send your staff to one or any combination of course offerings, which include: Hospitality and Restaurant Management, Controlling Foodservice Costs, Restaurant Marketing, and Human Resources Management and Supervision.

NYSERDA Sponsors Benchmarking Initiative to Help Commercial Building Owners Reduce Energy Use, Control Costs

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) launched a pilot program to help the commercial buildings sector reduce energy use, save on operating costs, and cut greenhouse gas emissions. Under the FlexTech Benchmarking Pilot, eligible customers will receive energy benchmarking and onsite energy assessments that will provide recommendations on low-cost building system upgrades.

Benchmarking can be a gateway to engaging in energy efficiency and can enable building owners, property managers, and facility operators to better understand and manage energy consumption. The pilot will also help applicable New York City facilities comply with Local Law 84, a component of the Greener, Greater Buildings Plan that requires building owners to benchmark energy consumption.

The pilot augments traditional NYSERDA FlexTech incentives by providing commercial, industrial, and institutional applicants up to $7,000 in benchmarking services per site with no cost-share. At a recent MCC Chairman’s Breakfast, Thomas Rizk of the Royal Danish Consulate General secured a meeting with speaker Cas Holloway, Deputy Mayor of Operations.  They will discuss waste initiatives in NYC and Denmark and discuss possible improvements for NYC.

MCC Board member Philip Kiracofe of Horizen Ventures recently presented at the MCC Transportation Transformation Summit on April 26. He spoke about MTB Ayiti - Mountain Biking and Adventure Tourism in Haiti. Also his Failure Club project was nominated for a Webby Award. It is a web based show about supporting people in pursuing nearly impossible goals.

United Way recognized MCC Platinum Partner Wells Fargo with a Summit award for exceptional volunteer engagement. Wells Fargo is United Way's top national campaign raising $56 million annually, plus 52,700 team members volunteered 1.5 million hours in 2011 – a 10.8% increase over last year. One of the most innovative aspects of Wells Fargo's extensive volunteer efforts is a unique Volunteer Leave Program that provides fully paid leave for up to four months for team members to work on a significant volunteer project impacting a nonprofit organization or school. In 2011, Wells Fargo awarded volunteer leave to more than 26 team members representing more than 32.5 months of paid leave. Clearwire Expands LTE Choices in North America

SAN DIEGO and BELLEVUE, Wash. — May 8, 2012 — Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) and Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ: CLWR) today announced that Qualcomm will add support for Clearwire’s upcoming LTE TDD network to its line of multi-mode LTE chipsets with the inclusion of support for 3GPP’s Band 41 (B41) radio frequency. This new enhancement builds on Qualcomm’s existing multi-mode, multi-band support for LTE FDD, LTE TDD and major broadband wireless standards, thus enabling OEMs to develop a wide variety of cost-effective, fully harmonized LTE devices for networks around the world.

NYC Business Solutions Customized Training provides access to employee training to keep businesses competitive and profitable. Customized Training eliminates the financial constraints that keep businesses from investing in staff development by providing awards of up to $400,000, which can cover 60-70% of eligible training costs.

To apply for Customized Training, applicants can complete the first step of the application process here. Once they complete the first step, applicants are immediately informed whether they are a good fit for Customized Training.

We provide funding for training in these four areas:
  • Training on recently purchased equipment or software

  • Training current staff to take on new responsibilities
  • Training to provide employees with the updated skills they need to stay current and competitive.
